Mail of the Week (February 14 - 18)

Glycolic 10% Daily Exfoliator Kit from NaturalSkinShop.com: I have never tried a peel before as I have dry and eczema-prone skin, but I jumped at the opportunity to try this one as it's the lightest strength available. The kit includes:

  • Glycolic Cleanser
  • Glycolic 10% Exfoliator
  • Hyaluronic Moisturizer
  • box of gauze pads

I'll keep you updated with the results.

Products from Marcelle Cosmetics: I got spoiled once again by the lovely Isabel from Marcelle Cosmetics! Here are the amazing goodies she sent me:

  • Multi-Colour Face Powder in Luminous Veil
  • Multi-Colour Powder Blush in Pink Fusion
  • Lux Diamond Liquid Eyeliner in Pure Gold
  • Lux Diamond Liquid Eyeliner in Silver
  • Liquid Eyeliner Pen in Teal
  • Liquid Eyeliner Pen in Chocolat
  • Liquid Eyeliner Pen in Olive
  • Liquid Eyeliner Pen in Black
  • Rouge Xpression Lipstick in Romanesque
  • Rouge Xpression Lipstick in Sentimental
  • Rouge Xpression Lipstick in Paris Rose
  • Essentials Soothing Cleansing Water

I spent the entire day I received them playing with those babies instead of studying LOL. Thank you so much Isabel! =D

Gift certificate from L'Oréal: Remember my complaint to L'Oréal regarding L'Oréal Féria Power Reds? Monday, I received a gift certificate for a box of hair dye of my choice (excluding Color Expert). That was pretty quick!

The DivaCup from iHerb.com: I have been curious about menstrual cups for some times now, and I finally decided to give a try after hearing many good times about it recently. The DivaCup retails for around $40 and up at drugstores in Quebec, so I was amazed to find it for only $26.60 on iHerb.com! I searched the net and managed to find a $5 off coupon code, so the grand total, with shipping ($3.00), was $24.60. Bargain! Now I wouldn't say I'm excited to get my periods... but still... LOL!

T-shirts from Crazy Dog T-Shirts: I was given the opportunity to review some shirts and give one away (but shhh, it's a secret!), so I chose Birthday Shotasaurus for me (you know I can't say no to alcohol...), and I let my boyfriend chose one from himself, which happened to be One Man Wolf Pack (quote from the movie Hangover). They are so soft and they fit perfectly!

Samples from MiN New York: I was contacted by Levi from MiN New York to try and review some of their products. I have never heard of this store before but I was curious to try their products, and so here is what I received:
  • samples of ProEnzyme Trio AntiAging Facial Cleanser
  • samples of 1270 Eau de Parfum by Frapin (which retails at $150.00!!!)
  • Alvarez Gomez Agua de Colonia Soap

Oster 12 Speed Glass Jar Blender from CSN Stores: I told you I needed a blender... and here it is! I already started using it to make my morning smoothies, and wow, I'm amazed! It blends and whips everything in a matter of seconds... I think I'm in love!

Pack of Dentyne Ice: Dentyne Canada is hosting a little game on Facebook, and they will send you a pack of gum if you take part in The Great Kissing Debate. Join the fun here!

T-shirt from TShirtPrinting.net: I was offered to review this cute shirt, and I decided that my boyfriend would be the model. What, he gets a free shirt after all! =P

I Want a Blender... And I Need Your Help!

I've been contemplating getting a blender for some times now as I would love to make my own smoothies. That way, I will eat more healthily (I don't eat enough fruits) and it will comes in handy in the morning when I'm in a rush before school. I decided to check out the wide selection available at CSN Stores as I've had positive experiences with them. As you might know from some of my previous posts, CSN Stores has over 200 online stores where you can find everything from stylish shoes, to swing set, or great cookware.

I need your help because it's the first time I shop for a blender and I'm lost in all of the options!

At first, I was really interested in one of those stick hand blenders that seem so practical, like this one:

But the thing with those kind of blenders is that I'm worrying they won't be powerful enough. I will use it mainly to make smoothies so I need it to be able to perfectly crunch ice and fruits.

I'm also curious about the Magic Bullet:

My friend Sara owns one and she says it works well to make baby food and smoothies, and she likes that you can prepare whatever you want directly in the mugs. My worry here is if the mugs are big enough or not to hold all of the ingredients...

I'm also tempted to go for a more traditional blender, like this one:

This is actually my first choice, as Oster is a well-known brand, and out of the three blenders listed in this post, this one gets the best reviews on the net. I'm tempted to play safe and go for it!

I woud love to know your opinion. Have you tried a stick hand blender before? Or the Magic Bullet? Do you have any recommendation? Haver any good smoothie recipes? Thank you very much!

What I think:

One of the most important thing I had in mind when chosing my school bag was the comfort of the shoulder strap, as well, I have to carry my bag around all day. This one is adjustable and padded, so it's perfect! The strap length is very good too (it's also adjustable), as I prefer to wear my bag low on my back.

Another important thing was the space available, as I carry lots of stuff with me when I go to school (netbook, books, pencil case, makeup bag, wallet, water bottle, food...). The main compartment is quite large, and there's even a padded laptop sleeve, so that means I don't even need to carry my own! But I would have like even more compartments (the ones on the outside are small and not very practical).

I made a little video to show you the details of the bag:

Upcoming review: Columbia Coral Fleece Throw

As a CSN Preferred Blogger, I have been contacted again by the Promotion Team over at CSN Stores to review one of their products. So I browsed trough their website and had a hard time making my mind, as there's so many interesting things out there: bar stools, clocks, lamps, shoes... but I think I finally made a choice:

Is there a better way to stay warm and comfortable in the colder months than snuggling in a soft blanket while sipping a hot chocolate?

I never knew that Columbia had a new line of bedding by Columbia Home, but as it's is a well-known outdoor gear brand, I know this blanket will keep me warm.

I'll let you know what I think of it in an upcoming post!

What a way to start off the morning with a nice, hot cup of espresso coffee or cappuccino for those looking for a sweet taste of Italy! With its many features, there is no going wrong to enjoy the deep, rich, and more satisfying experience for the avid coffee drinker.

What I think:
Please note that this is my first experience with an espresso machine so I can't really compare it with another.

Shipping: The shipping was pretty fast as I placed my order on June 30 and the day after, I received an email to let me know that it have been shipped out. When I came back from my vacations in Wilwdood on July 9, the espresso machine has arrived.

This is what the invoice looks like:

I live in Quebec, Canada, so I had to pay shipping fees ($7.95) and international fees ($13.19). The promo is the promotional code sent to me by CSN Stores. I personally hate having to pay for shipping, and even more for international fees. I totally kills me -_-

Product:
In the instructions booklet, you will find detailled steps on how to make a perfect espresso, a cappuccino, and how to clean and maintain the machine. The instructions come in English, French, Spanish and Italian. For this review, I'm going to show you how the machine performs when doing 2 cappuccinos. I'm following the guidelines from the instructions booklet provided with the machine:

The first step is to put water into the boiler according to the amounts shown in the table (shown above). You can use the carafe supplied to put the exact amount of water recommended:

Water level must coincide with steam symbol on the carafe.

After inserting the filter into the filter holder, use the provided measuring spoon to put the coffee evenly into the filter according to the amount shown in the table.

I use Cafe Copan 100% Pure Monduran Coffee.

To attach the filter holder to the machine, the instructions booklet recommends to place it under the heater faucet and then press the filter holder upwards while at the same time rotating counter-clockwise all the way. Let me tell you that it absolutely doesn't work. I have no idea how that thing works, but I'm almost never able to firmly set the filter holder in its housing. Seriously... take a look at that:

That's the best I can do!

Next, place the carafe (or a cup) under the filter holder. Using the table as a guide, pour the required amount of milk into the carafe. The best results will be achieved using whole milk (not skim), which would be at refrigerator temperature.

The instructions booklet recommend using maximum 1 carafe filled to the level 4.

Transfer the milk into a container (I use a simple glass). It is said that the container should be large enough to allow the milk to expand to triple its volume, but... anyway, you'll see for yourself.

Press the ON/OFF switch. When the coffee starts to drip from the filter holder, place the steam nozzle in the milk ensuring that the nozzle opening is just under the surface of the milk, and open the steam valve by turning the steam knob counter-clockwise. Move the container up and down under the steam nozzle (this is supposed to give maximum froth). Froth the milk until the steam in the boiler has been completely used up, then turn the steam knob in a clockwise direction.

This is my second complaint. Look for yourself:

See how the milk frother wand is short and really close to the machine? It makes it really akward to use.

And this is the best I can do. Pretty disappointing.

The frother doesn't seem to be powerful enough; you barely get a hot cup of milk and very, very little steam. To get some extra steam, I have to run it through an extra cycle just for steam. What a waste of time!

 Final result.

I'm pretty disappointed, as my idea of the ideal cappucino looks more like this:

image from Google Images

They say to use milk at refrigerator temperature, but the frother doesn't heat it enough. When pouring it into the coffee, it only makes it cold, and I have to put it into the microwave. Maybe it's defective? As I said, this is my first epxerience with an espresso machine, so I absolutely don't know what a machine at such a low price can achieve.

Pros:
  • inexpensive
  • brews quickly
  • easy to use
  • easy to clean
  • instructions are clear and simple
  • large water container
  • small and doesn't take a lot of place

Cons:
  • looks cheap (plastic)
  • makes lots of noise
  • you have to use very small cups if you want the two of them to fit under the filter holder
  • you cannot steam milk unless the coffee is brewing
  • the milk frother wand is too short
  • the milk steamer doesn't seem to be powerful enough to make good steam (doesn't heat enough)
  • the placement of the steam nozzle (too close to the machine) makes it akward to use

Recommend? no
